Traditionally, the famous Thermal books (Kittel, Zemansky/Dittman, et. al) leave much to be desired.
Baierlein takes a fresh look to the subject and introduces thermal physics and statistical mechanics in a refreshing and unique way. There are some lapses in logic in a few derivations, and minor errors -- but compared to Zemansky/Dittman ed. 7, this thing is the holy grail.
I think the third edition is coming out soon, so I suspect many of the minor errors will be rectified by then.
The exercises are challenging, and do an excellent job of reinforcing the physical principles involved.
In general, a well written book that incorporates some elements of modern physics. Hightly recommended. |
